Pelican Yacht Club
The Louis J. Thibodeaux Youth Sailing Program is a subsidiary of the Pelican Yacht Club of which Louis Thibodeaux was a member at the time of his death. While closely affiliated, the Club and the Program operate somewhat independent of one another. Fortunately, the Club shares its storage facilities and sailboats with the Program. Further, a number of Club members volunteer to help out at the youth sailing camps.
The Club was first established on False River in 1960 and still maintains its presence at a storage facility at Jarreau on the so-called “island side” of False River. In addition, the Club moors a 19-ft Mariner sailboat for club events and the use of its members at Marina Del Ray located on the Tchefuncta River at Madisonville, LA.
Club memberships are family memberships, thus allowing every member of a family to enjoy the activities and resources of the Club. Once properly qualified, members are allowed access to all club boats- the Mariner at Madisonville, a 19-ft Flying Scot sailboat at New Roads, and Sunfish sailboats at the Jarreau storage facility at no cost. Further, free sailing lessons can be provided if needed.
